Zambia joins the rest of the world in celebrating International Nurses Day under the theme “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.” This theme underscores the pressing need to equip nurses with essential resources, secure working conditions, and leadership opportunities, thereby strengthening healthcare systems worldwide.
Speaking in an interview with ZNBC TV1 on the Lozi programme dubbed ‘Njuwelelo Yaluna’, Zambia Union of Government and Allied Workers (UG) Director in charge of Professional Affairs, Dr. Allen Siyubo, mentioned that the Zambian Government’s effort through the Ministry of Health in employing 3,000 Health Personnel, with yet another target projection of 3,500 later in the year. This shows the government’s commitment to improving the nurse - patient ratio.
This is both symbolic and practical, as we celebrate nurses day while advocating for systemic reforms to empower them. The message is clear—empowered nurses are central to saving lives and building a stronger health system.
He went on to say that Zambia still faces nurse shortages, especially in rural areas, making empowerment crucial for equitable healthcare delivery. There is need to understand that empowered nurses strengthen Zambia’s ability to respond to pandemics, climate-related health challenges, and maternal-child health needs. By investing in nurses, Zambia supports its broader goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and improving population health outcomes.
He emphasized that as a Trade Union, we fully support the theme by advocating for better service conditions, fair pay, and recognition of nurses’ contributions.
Dr. Siyubo stated that International Nurses Day 2026 is not only a celebration of nurses but also a call for meaningful reforms within the healthcare sector. Empowering nurses through better working conditions, leadership opportunities, skills development, and government support is essential for saving lives and strengthening Zambia’s healthcare system. The message of the theme remains clear: empowered nurses are key to building a healthier and stronger future.
