The President of the Republic of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, has called on men in society to act responsibly in order to address the growing challenge of early child pregnancies.
The President stated that men must take responsibility for their actions and avoid engaging in relationships with young girls, emphasizing that men should instead pursue relationships with mature and consenting adults.
He made these remarks during the International Women’s Day celebrations held in Lusaka under the theme “Rights, Justice and Action for All Women and Girls.”
Mr. Hichilema also called upon traditional leaders to work closely with government and communities to curb harmful practices such as early marriages and other social vices that negatively affect girls.
He stressed the need to build a society where every girl has the opportunity to thrive and where women’s choices and rights are respected.
“When women are uplifted, the nation is uplifted,” the President said as he celebrated women and girls for their resilience despite the many adversities they continue to face.
The Head of State further acknowledged that women play a critical role in the country’s economic and social development, emphasizing that empowering women is key to national progress.
